GMO's - Genetically Modified Organisms
Avoiding GMOs
1. Buy products labeled “100% organic,” “organic,” or “made with organic ingredients. 2. Buy products that carry the Non-GMO Project Seal 3. Recognize fruit and vegetable label numbers.
5. Try to shop locally, if considered safe 6. Grow your own food and 7. Purchase as much as possible from a trusted, organic, non-GMO sustainable company like Young Living. Below are the results of rats being fed GMO food! |
GMOs are living organisms whose genetic material has been artificially manipulated in a lab through genetic engineering. As a result, this science creates unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacteria and viral genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods.
DNA from different species of living organisms, bacteria, or viruses is used to acquire desired traits that allow organisms to build resistance to disease or tolerance of pesticides. Scientists promised that genetic modification would offer increased yield, drought tolerance, enhanced nutrition, and many other consumer benefits. Not quite. Today, growing evidence connects GMOs with various health problems, environmental damage and violation of farmers’ and consumers’ rights. As a result, many countries have placed significant restrictions or complete bans on both production and sale of GMOs. Why you should be concerned about GMOs GMOs have been linked to various diseases and viruses in humans. These include increased allergies, cancer, tumours, digestive and bowel syndromes and even autism. Animals have been found with tumours, (see side picture of rats)damaged immune systems, smaller brains, livers, birth defects, reproductive problems and infertility. GMOs are bad for the environment too Scientists genetically engineer crops so they can withstand massive spraying with the toxic pesticide. This means that the pesticide doesn’t readily break down in the environment, and as a result ends up in our streams and traces of it in our food. Remember, pesticides are for the most part nerve toxins that kill insects by poisoning their nervous systems. So how good is that for us? New super weeds and super bugs are becoming resistant, so more stronger pesticides are being used everyday. These pesticides have been found to be largely responsible for the dying off of many insects, including honey bees and Monarch butterflies. |
What foods are GMO?
Think that your cotton clothes are okay? Think again - most are GMO's too.
Think that your cotton clothes are okay? Think again - most are GMO's too.
- Soy (94%), cotton (90%), canola (90%), sugar beets (95%), corn (88%), Hawaiian papaya (more than 50%), zucchini and yellow squash (over 24,000 acres)
- Products derived from the above, including oils from all four, soy protein, soy lecithin, cornstarch, corn syrup and high fructose corn syrup
- Shockingly, Approximately 90% of all products on supermarket shelves contain GMO ingredients!
Most are not aware that it is now 15 years since genetically engineered (GE) crops and foods were first introduced into Canada. Currently there are 4 GE crops grown in Canada: with more plans underway, unless you speak up! Corn, Canola, Soy, Sugar Beet
The above four crops are either insect resistant (genetically engineered to produce its own internal pesticide and thus regulated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as an insecticide), herbicide tolerant (resists being sprayed with weed killers), or are "stacked" with both traits. We could also be importing GE papaya, squash, cottonseed oil and milk products from the US.

As she points out- Polls show that about 90 percent of Canadians want GMOs labelled. We have consistently voiced our desire for the right to know what’s in our food, and the freedom to choose what we eat.
